Brief Description: Woodburytype mounted directly on to the printed page of the periodical, on the front of the issue for November 15, 1878 (vol.6 no.139), page 449. Portrait of D. E. Hughes, seated half length, turned slightly to left and looking more to left. The photograph was specially taken by Mayall to accompany a biographical article about Hughes (pages 449-51), who had come to prominence that very year as a result of his invention of the microphone.

Brief Description: Woodburytype mounted directly on to the printed page of the periodical, on the front of the issue for August 15, 1878 (vol.6 no.133), page 325. Portrait of Ernst Werner Siemens, seated half length, turned to left but looking nearly front. Rich chocolate brown. The photograph accompanies a biographical article (pages 325-7). The companion photographs in the same volume (of his brother C. W. Siemens and of D. E. Hughes) are both by J. E. Mayall, but presumably Werner Siemens was photographed in Germany.

Portrait of Charles William Siemens, seated half length, turned slightly to left but looking nearly front. Detached from the page and loosely inserted (in fact except for a pressure mark there is no sign adhesive). The photograph accompanies a biographical article (pages 41-44).
Primary Inscriptions: Captioned on the printed page: 'From a photograph by Mr. E. J. Mayall.' [correctly J.E.].
