Brief Description: Stipple engraving, half length, oval. Framed and glazed. The subject is Alexander Monro secundus, as he was known, the middle of three generations of that name who were successively professors of anatomy at Edinburgh.

With a manuscript inscription by Alexander Monro, son of the subject, dated 1815, presenting it to a colleague or pupil. Alexander Munro tertius was joint professor with his father from 1800 and taught the course himself from 1808, succeeding to the chair on his father's death in 1817.

Frame for stipple engraving. The frame is wooden and painted black, a gilt wooden mount, wooden backboard and is glazed.
Primary Inscriptions: Printed captions: 'Engraved by Jas. Heath from a Picture by Raeburn.'; 'Alexander Monro, M.D. F.R.S.E. | Professor of Anatomy & Surgery in the University of Edinburgh.'; and 'Published July 1st. 1800, by Jas. Heath ... & J. P. Thompson ... [London]'. Manuscript inscription below caption: 'Edinbgh April 22d 1815 | To Mr Wm Brown, I present this portrait of | my father in testimony of his regular attendance | at the Conversations held in the anatl theatre | during Session 1814··15 and of his knowledge in | the Sciences of anaty & Surgery | Subsd A Monro M D & P.'.
