?Flemish ARMILLARY SPHERE and ASTRONOMICAL RING
c.1550

Brass, gilt brass, and bronze. unsigned and undated; inscribed, below the kneeling figure (?Atlas), 'SIC LVDITVR ASTRIS'. Height 460 mm.; diameter 192 mm.

Pointers indicate the positions of 16 fixed stars. Within the usual circles representing the equator, the tropics, the polar circles, and the ecliptic, there is an astronomical ring (see description in the case of astronomical rings in this gallery). In the Zodiac/calendar scale on the horizon circle, Aries 0° = 11 March. This indicates that this instrument was made before the adoption of the Gregorian calendar (in 1582 in most European countries).
