PTOLEMAIC ARMILLARY SPHERE of unknown origin.
Not signed and not dated. Brass; ht: 991 mm. This is an armillary sphere constructed according to the planetary system of Ptolemy. It shows the great circles of the heavens and the ecliptic; no fixed stars are indicated. The base is engraved with the coat of arms and quarterings, crest and badge of Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, K.G. (1564-1632), generally known as 'The Wizard Earl'.
In 1601, this armillary sphere was presented to the Bodleian Library by Sir Josias Bodley, the Founder's brother. It came to Oxford in 1613.
