Satirical snuff box

This papier-m√Ęche box has a cartoon on the lid which shows the astronomer Sir John Herschel observing the moon by unconventional means and discovering unusual life forms. It probably relates to a series of hoax reports being published in the New York Sun in 1835, purporting to describe the fabulous discoveries Herschel was making in his observatory in South Africa.
