CONCAVE BLACK MARBLE DISK
?c.1700

Octagonal black marble disc of unknown origin, but which may have belonged to Lord Orrery. This disc apparently was used for polishing lenses according to the method described by Zahn, Oculus artificialis: Telescopii practico-mechanici Fabrica, 1686 (p.9). True black marble of the most even grain, and free from white veins or threads was also used for the final polishing of speculum mirrors.

Lent by Christ Church.
