English CAMERA OBSCURA
c.1710

Wood, gold-tooled vellum covered tube to lens mount, mirror, ground glass screen missing; unsigned and undated.

Microscope and telescope lenses of this period were usually held in position by cylindrical pasteboard tubes covered with leather or vellum. The tube on this camera obscura may be a shortened telescope tube. The gold-tooling is characteristic of telescopes and microscopes manufactured in London in the period 1700-1725.
