'Grand Universal' microscope by Benjamin Martin

Displayed here with some of its accessories, the 'Grand Universal' was the largest model of microscope made by Martin. Despite its impressive size, when this example was bought by the Royal Microscopical Society at the auction sale of John Quekett's effects in 1861, the primary motive cannot have been the acquisition of a working instrument.
