French PRAXINOSCOPE c.1877
This improvement on the Zoetrope was invented and patented in 1877 by Professor
Emile Reynaud. Instead of slots to peer through there are rectangular mirrors set
round an inner drum which reflect the image drawn on the paper strip fixed to the
inside of the outer drum. When set in motion the impression of movement is smoo-
ther and less fatiguing to the eyes than is the case with earlier devices.
The label on the instrument is inscribed : "LE PRAXINOSCOPE ER DEPOSE", and
the animated strip is inscribed : "ER. INV. ET DEL. PARIS".
