Narratives

South Italian silver amulets

These Neopolitan silver amulets were worn by women to protect mother and child from the evil eye. The Cimaruta [2] embodies all the antiseptic properties of the french herb, and its potency was further increased by the addition of crescent moons, keys, lotus flowers, and other amulets. The Sirena is the Neopolitan incarnation of Isis or Diana (here represented by the crescent-moon [4]) with all her helpful attributes.
