German HORIZONTAL STRING-GNOMON DIAL

Gilt brass, ivory and enamel. Stamped with the punch-mark, a crown {crown symbol}, of Paul Reinman of Nuremberg; undated.

For latitude c.48°
On top of the lid is a miniature in enamel of a couple; inside the lid is engraved a picture of a hare. Underneath is engraved a picture of a cock crowing. This instrument was probably an engagement or wedding gift.
