MS Gunther 64

OXFORD BOTANIC GARDEN. Bound volume, labelled on the spine 'Physic Garden', containing miscellaneous printed and MS material relating to the Botanic Garden, Oxford, during the period 1873-1918, collected by Edward Chapman and R. T. Gunther (and bound together by Gunther); in addition to the Botanic Garden, there are references to the Oxford Chair and Department of Botany, the gardens of St John's College, the Selborne Society, the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, and Kew Gardens.
The printed material includes several published pamphlets, viz.: A Letter to Dr. Hooker ... from Dr. Acland ... (Oxford, 1875); the 1st to 7th, 9th, 10th, 17th, and 20th Annual Report of the Curators of the Botanic Garden (Oxford, 1888-1907); Delectus Seminum Horti Botanici Universitatis Oxoniensis (Oxford, 1890 and 1891); as well as various printed reports, leaflets, letters, and notices.
The autograph letters are as follows: letters, mostly to Edward Chapman, relating to the administration of the Botanic Garden from W. B. Gamlen (Secretary to the University Chest), J. E. Henderson (Bursar of Magdalen College), E. H. Cradock (Senior Curator of the Botanic Garden), Messrs Fisher & Hobdell, William Henry White (Oxford Local Board), Edward Chapman (Curator of the Botanic Garden), James Mansergh, J. Eldridge (The Oxford Gas Light & Coke Co.), John Smith (Kew Gardens), J. H. Gilbert, C. H. Wright, F. P. Morrell (Clerk to Oxford Local Board), Isaac Bayley Balfour, F. P. Bulley, Sydney H. Vines (Professor of Botany), H. G. Liddell (Dean of Christ Church), W. J. Wixon Jerves, and E. B. Poulton (Hope Department of Zoology), 1876-93; 2 letters between Edward Chapman and J. R. Magrath (Vice Chancellor), 1898, concerning the lack of validity of the former's honorary appointment as a perpetual Curator of the Garden; letter to R. T. Gunther from unknown (Imperial College of Science and Technology), 1918; letter to R. T. Gunther from Isaac Bayley Balfour (Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh), 1911, associated with 2 letters from Wilhelm Schönland, 1885.
In addition there is a MS of 5 leaves by John Phillips entitled 'On the suggested Removal of The Botanic Garden to a site adjacent to the University Museum', 1873; various financial documents of the Garden for the years 1878, 1883, 1891, and 1913-14; and a photograph (albumen print) of part of the Garden and buildings, including a man and an interesting tree [?1870s].
[Collection and papers of Dr R. T. Gunther. Much of this material was acquired by Gunther from Edward Chapman, his predecessor as science tutor at Magdalen College and a Curator of the Botanic Garden. Gunther's book Oxford Gardens (Oxford, 1912) was principally about the Botanic Garden, and he was elected one of the Curators shortly after its publication.]
