Ivory dials

Ivory was a popular material for sundials. It was used for horizontal dials with brass [1] and string [3] gnomons. [2] is more of a gadget, combining a horizontal dial on a compass card with a circular thermometer. Diptych dials carry several sundials; [4] has a horizontal dial on its base and an equinoctial dial on its upper leaf. Dieppe was a centre of sundial production in the 17th and 18th centuries and the magnetic azimuth dial [5] was a characteristic product. The time is indicated by the position of the magnetic needle over the silver hour scale.
