Inclining dial

Although this looks like a simple horizontal dial, it is more complex than it seems. By means of a scale built into the gnomon, it can be inclined for use in any latitude between 40° and 60°. The hour-plate is engraved with lines for different systems of hours, as well as lines for the declination of the sun throughout the year. The solar declination, or the date, is found from the shadow cast by the notch in the sloping edge of the gnomon.
