Instruments from Muslim Spain and North Africa

Mathematics was enthusiastically studied in the Islamic culture of medieval Spain. Toledo [1] was an important centre of learning, but scholars also travelled further afield: the maker of [2] was born in Zaragossa but studied in Egypt. The similarities in design between the Spanish astrolabes and a slightly later example from North Africa [4] show that styles of manufacture also travelled widely.
