Temporary exhibition label - "Succession"

"Founding father / This family's tradition of astrolabe-making seems to have been begun by Allahdad. On this instrument he signs himself as 'the master craftsman Allahdad, astrolabist of Lahore'. / Although later members of the family associate him with the Mughal emperor Humayun, there is no independent evidence to suggest that he had an imperial appointment. This astrolabe is thought to date from about 1570, in the reign of Humayun's successor Akbar, who ruled from 1556 to 1605."
