German CRESCENT DIAL
1713

Gilt brass, silvered brass and brass. Not signed; dated, 'Anno 1713'.

A very rare form of sundial. The vertical disc, representing the meridian, can turn within the outer gilt brass ring, and is adjusted so that the appropriate latitude (marked on the disc) is aligned with the index mark below the suspension-ring. The hours are marked on the silvered segment of a circle and the curved pointer above is the gnomon, which is adjusted to the correct date by sliding it along the date-scale to which it is attached. The gnomon and hour-scale fold flat in the plane of the meridian disc when not in use; and in use are erected perpendicularly on the appropriate side of the meridian disc.
