Strictly speaking, this is a closed inhaler rather than an open mask.
The design meant the anaesthetist could gradually increase the
concentration of ether and then maintain a high level of the anaesthetic.
Gauze pushed down into the tube properly would have
a flat surface, ensuring even distribution of the ether through the
fabric and preventing drips.
