Two English LUMINOUS SPIRAL DISCHARGE TUBES
c.1860

Unsigned
Both tubes consist of broken spiral of circular pieces of tin foil pasted on clear glass inner tube, enclosed in outer tube with horizontal white bands, and in contact with the brass caps. When one end of tube is brought into contact with prime conductor of electrical machine and other end is earthed, a stream of sparks will jump across the tin foil gaps forming a luminous spiral in the dark. These tubes were sold in the late 18th century onwards.
