Narratives

A dial read like a clock

The vertical quadrant is for setting the dial for latitude. It must then be aligned with the meridian; the compass originally in the base is missing. One of two 'hands' has a string gnomon and is rotated until the shadow of the string falls on the target line below: this hand then indicates the hour on the dial plate, the other hand the minute.
