Elaborately decorated diptych dial

This dial, dated 1599, is signed by Paul Reinmann of Nuremberg and is also stamped with his mark, a crown. The extensive decoration includes a vignette of a putto with a skull and sand glass, a reminder of mortality, two Roman soldiers holding pennants, birds and foliage. With the decoration and the many different devices for telling the time, this example sits towards the luxury end of the spectrum of Nuremberg dials.
