German DIPTYCH DIAL
1578

Ivory and brass. Signed, "PAVLVS REINMAN ZV NORMBERG" with the maker's mark {??}; dated, "1578".

Includes: 1. Wind-rose (vane, kept in compartment in lower leaf now missing); 2. Vertical string-gnomon dial, and vertical pin-gnomon dial for Italian hours; 3. Horizontal string-gnomon dial, horizontal pin-gnomon dial for Babylonian hours, and compass.

On top of the upper leaf are engraved illustrations of four men, using a cylinder dial, a diptych dial, an astrolabe and an armillary sphere, respectively. On the bottom of the lower leaf is a picture of a woman holding a pot of flowers.
