Italian PTOLEMAIC ARMILLARY SPHERE 1601

Signed, underneath the horizon ring, 'CORNELIO VINCHX FIAM< DAMVERSØ
FÆCEB, NEAPOLI Anno 1601'. Brass; ht: 568mm. This is an armillary sphere
constructed according to the planetary system of Ptolemy. Pointers indicate the position
of seventeen fixed stars.
This instrument was made for Camillo oGonzaga, Count of Novellara (1581-1650), whose
name and arms are engraved on the base. An astrolobe, which Cornelius Vinchx executed
for Camillo Gonzaga in 1600, is in the British Museum.
