33. Concealed Bellows Camera in Box, c. 1900

Mahogany box camera with reflex viewfinders for plates 90 x 120 mm. Back with swing and tilt adjustments and ground glass focusing screen. Carl Zeiss f7.2 anastigmat lens of 195 mm focal length, with between lens iris diaphragm, and attached to a Thornton-Pickard roller blind shutter. Superior 'Detective camera' probably of Continental make. When the public became used to seeing photographers, cameras intended for 'candid photography' were made smaller and could be concealed on the person (see Items 89 to 92).
