130. 'Phoenix' Combined Drop and Flap Shutter, c.1884

Signed on flap: 'THE PHOENIX SHUTTER PATENT REYNOLDS & BRANSON LEEDS'

To fit over lens of 50 mm diameter. Patented by F. W. Branson in 1884, and sold under several trade names. The flap covering lens is impelled upwards by means of large brown-stained brass knob with internal spring, this movement released the drop whose downward movement is speeded up by means of a rubber band. For slow exposures the flap was operated alone by hand by means of a brass knurl-edged knob.
