Exhibition: The Astrolabe, East and West

Oxford owners

The single plate is for the latitude of Oxford and the astrolabe belongs to Oriel College. It may be associated with the group of mathematicians in 14th-century Oxford known as the 'Merton School', perhaps coming to the College among the astronomical instruments bequeathed by the astronomer Simon Bredon, who had been a Fellow of Merton in about 1330.
