Exhibition: The Astrolabe, East and West

An early European workshop

This astrolabe can be attributed to Jean Fusoris, the earliest known European astrolabe maker with an established workshop, which he set up in Paris in the late fourteenth century. The son of a pewterer, he wrote treatises on astronomical instruments and on astronomy, and his clients included princes, monarchs, bishops and even a Pope.
