Provenance
Museum correspondence shows that it was
purchased from Major C. E. Ross in February 1925, but it was
not recorded at the time in the Museum's accession records or
annual reports. It was the first astrolabe the Museum ever
purchased, to add to the collection donated by Lewis Evans.
Major Ross's father, 'who was many years in Persia as
Resident in the Gulf' (that is, the British government's
representative), acquired it in Persia in Victorian times.
