Provenance

Backer was a London dealer who in 1952 offered the Sestieri collection for sale to English museums; the Museum purchased this astrolabe together with three armillary spheres and a planetarium. The collection had been formed in {?}recent times by a collector in Rome. The astrolabe formerly belonged to the Guinigi family, of Lucca, Italy.
