Provenance
The Museum purchased it with a grant from
the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, and supplementary
grants from Lord Leigh's Fund, the Hulme Surplus Reserve
Fund, the National Art Collections Fund, and the Higher
Studies Fund. It was lot 13 in the auction sale of 26
February 1962. It had previously been bought by a dealer at a
minor auction sale in London of some miscellaneous effects
(probably of a deceased person) which had been in storage for
some time. Efforts to trace its earlier provenance were not
successful.
