Provenance
Evans bought it from the astrophysicist W.
J. S. Lockyer (son and assistant of Sir Norman Lockyer) in
1920. Lockyer bought it from 'an old curiosity shop' in
Göttingen about 1895. The shopkeeper told him that he had
acquired it at the request of the astronomer E. F. W.
Klinkerfues, of Göttingen University observatory, who
apparently used it but did not buy it (Klinkerfues committed
suicide in 1884).
