Throne, Ring and Shackle

The throne is of the engraved type made of gilt brass with satyrs support(s) made of gilt brass attached with screwed base made of gilt brass and has a simple, round cross-section ring made of brass and eye-bolt type shackle made of brass . More information

Mater

The mater and limb are of two pieces, riveted construction. Scales on the limb: equal hours scale; degree scale; shadow square scale; shadow square scale.

The limb is inscribed: with a maker's signature marked as Regnerus Arsenius Nepos Gemmæ Frisÿ fecit Louanÿ anno 1565 (Made at Louvain in 1565 by Regnerus Arsenius, nephew of Gemma Frisius). This signature is located on the limb, just below the throne. with a direction marked as MERIDIES (South). This inscription is located directly below the throne. with a direction marked as OCCIDENS (West). This inscription is located at the 3 o'clock position. with a direction marked as SEPTENTRIO (North). Type Details
AlidadeDouble-ended, counter-changed. The two sighting vanes are later additions. They are attached with screws and cover up some of the engraving on the alidade. The original sights would have been wider than the arms of the alidade in order to align the pinholes.
