It is unusual to have an astrolabe so precisely dated. The maker’s inscription tells us that it was made ‘in the city of Toledo in Shawwal in the year 460 of the Hijra’. Shawwal is the tenth lunar month in the Islamic calendar and the equivalent date in the Christian calendar is August 1068. This makes this astrolabe the earliest in the collection to have been made in Europe. In the eleventh century Toledo was a great cultural centre for Muslims, Christians and Jews alike and a site for collaboration and exchange of ideas. It is appropriate that the zodiacal calendar on the back of this astrolabe has the names of the Christian months both in Arabic transliteration and in Latin.
