detail of astrolabe MHS inv. 37527This astrolabe is not signed or dated, but the style indicates that it was made in North Africa in the 16th or early 17th century. It belonged to John Selden, benefactor to the Bodleian Library, who was a scholar, antiquarian and enthusiast for oriental languages. The astrolabe came to the Bodleian in 1659 with Selden’s collection of books.
