THE next Delta Lecture, sponsored by the Museum in partnership with the South Kensington Institute for the History of Technology and the Whipple Museum of the History of Science, will be held at the Whipple Museum in Cambridge at 4.30 p.m. on the 1st June. This will be the sixth lecture in the now well-established series, the previous Oxford contributions having been given by Svante Lindqvist on ‘The bricks and mortar of science’, and John North on Holbein’s Ambassadors. On this occasion, the lecturer will be the historian of early museums, Paula Findlen, whose book Possessing Nature: Museums, Collecting, and Scientific Culture in Early Modern Italy has become one of the most influential publications in this growing area of scholarly research. Her intriguing lecture title reads: “Is a Crocodile a Work of Art? Seeing Objects in the Early Modern Cabinet of Curiosities”. |
