Visit by Minister for Culture

Spring, 1998

THE top gallery of the Museum, the first accommodation for the Musæum Ashmoleanum from its creation in 1683, was recently chosen as the site for a visit by Mark Fisher, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Mr Fisher is the minister responsible for Museums and he was visiting Oxford to present representatives of the four ‘designated’ museums in the University with their certificates. Whilst in the building Mr Fisher was able to browse the Museum’s website, which he subsequently singled out at the MGC conference on the future of museums as an example of excellence in the field.

Mr Fisher is pictured above with the Keeper, holding an astrolabe by Thomas Gemini of 1559 made for Queen Elizabeth I.
