Art of Engraving Workshop

Autumn, 1996

A one-day workshop on the ‘Art of Engraving’ has been arranged jointly by the Museum and the Scientific Instrument Society and will be held in Oxford on Saturday the 16th November.

The workshop will open with an address from Professor Gerard Turner, who has made a particular study of engraving in recent years and who has developed techniques for identifying the characteristic ‘hands’ of individual makers. This will be followed by two parallel sessions, one in the Museum on books and prints, the other in the Bodleian Library on maps and charts, where a selection of mater ial will be laid out in a room in the Old Schools Quadrangle specially for the occasion, with Paula Dryburgh introducing the items on display.

After lunch, Christopher Elton, who is a practising hand engraver, will give an illustrated talk and practical demonstration of his craft. Finally, Gerard Turner will lead a workshop on the examination of engraving and punch marks on instruments.

Numbers for the event are limited, so those who wish to attend are urged to register before the 8th November by sending a cheque for £8 to the Secretary of the Museum, at the address on the back page. Allocation of places will be on a ‘first come first served’ basis; successful applicants will be sent further details on confirmation of booking.
